The drama, the tension, and the chorus of delirium from the crowd have finally come to an end along with the finale of the Wimbledon championship. Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic emerged out of the championship as the champion for the 3rd time in his career and also it was his 9th grand slam overall.
Why was the 2015 Wimbledon championship so special? Because many unforgettable events took place this year where some unseeded players triumphed over the well-known players. An American lady won herself her 21st grand-slam title and the lady is no other than Serena Williams. It Was the best ever performance by Indians at a grand slam event, three Indians came out as the winners in their respective events. Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis who were seeded No.1 in the women’s doubles event delivered on the stature, while in mixed doubles Leander Paes and Martina Hingis won the event quite nimbly and the most surprising and astonishing winning moment for an Indian was when a young Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal along with his Vietnamese partner Lý Hoàn Nam won boy’s doubles event at Wimbledon 2015.
The championship kicked off in a very brisk way where every seeded player came over an unseeded player. So the first round saw no upsets but the second round of the championship witnessed a major setback to the tournament as the 14-time grand slam winner and nine-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the championship by a German Dreadlocked Dustin Brown who was ranked below 100 in the championship. The German took no time to thwart away the Spaniard and was ousted in just 4 sets. This was the fourth successive time that Rafael Nadal was unable Penetrate into the quarterfinals. The epic encounter of these gentlemen grabbed so many eyeballs that eventually the match was remarked as the greatest tennis match of all time. Dustin Brown became an overnight star, and his fancy dreadlocks and a tattoo of Dennis Brown on his torso also added up some points in his style quotient. His old school tennis style of play of “serve and volley” garnered so many fans all around the world that everybody wanted him to go long into the tournament but unfortunately he fell off into the very next round where he lost the match against an another Serbian Viktor Troicki.
There was another player who had a tough path to walk on but the champion shrugged away each and every difficulty in her own way and as a result, the champion crowned the champion for yet another time. Yes I am talking about Serena Williams who had a challenging draw this year, she had to play against her sister Venus Williams in the fourth round, where came out in straight sets then she went to play against Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals were Serena struggled a bit but eventually won the match and then the biggest challenge of the tournament was waiting for her in the semifinals were she was booked to play against the Russian champion Maria Sharapova. Well, the odds favored her to win the match as she carries an impeccable track record against Maria Sharapova and she didn’t disappoint anyone and went on to reserve her place in the finals where she faced no competition against Garbine Muruguza of Spain and clinched her 21st Grand slam title.
On the closing day of the championship, Novak Djokovic thrashed Roger Federer in the finals to win his 3rd Wimbledon title and prolonged drought of grand slam title continued for The Swiss master.
