The formation of Gujarat state took place in the year 1960. As we all know ( or not ), Ahmedabad was the state capital at that time and state assembly was functional in the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Building that is available at present day. This happened after the Bombay state was divided into Gujarat and Maharashtra on 1st of May, 1960.

Vithalbhai Patel Bhavan is located near CH 5 on the CH road of Gandhinagar.
The current Legislative Assembly was established by president Neelam Sanjiva Reddy on 20th of March, 1978 designed by architect H. K. Mewada, who also was the chief planner of Gandhinagar City.
Vithalbhai Patel (1873 – 22 October 1933) was an Indian legislator and leader of politics. He was the elder brother of Sardar Patel and co-founder of the Swaraj Party. This Building is of Legislative Assembly of Gujarat or Gujarat Vidhansabha situated at Gujarat capital, Gandhinagar. Present building is situated between Blocks of Sachivalay. The architecture is sound and construction of building was completed in Year 1982 and presently all 182 MLA of Gujarat Seat here.Presently there are 2 Sachivalay [old & new]. Old one is named as DR Jivraj Mehta Bhawan where honorable chief minister and minister used to sit. Thereafter new Sachivalay building was constructed in which 14 blocks were constructed in which government different department employees sit and works for public. In the middle of this campus Vidhansabha building is situated and on both the side of this building Swarnim Sankul-1 and Swarnim Sankul-2 was made for honorable ministers. Timing of Sachivalay is from 11:00 am to 6:10 pm and for visitors it’s from 12:00 pm to 6:10 pm. Visitors can go in any department after taking entry pass.
Representatives and NGOs representative visit Sachivalay frequently. Such individuals can pay rs 200 as an annual charge and get pass with one year validity. In the west wing of old Sachivalay, Gandhinagar Jilla Panchayat building is located. In it’s north direction Pathik-ashram is located. The Sachivalay is situated on CH road or on Smt. Indira Gandhi Road. In front of the Vidhansabha building is a 3 km long garden and at the end of this garden is Mahatma Mandir.
It is also notable that originally the assembly was functional in the Gujarat Library Building in Sector – 17.
