Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment as the new chairman of FTII(film and Television institute of india) has received a major backlash from the students of the pioneer institute as well as people all around the country have raised questions about this move.
There are certain aspects about why this appointment has swept so many disgraceful feedbacks from the people.
First is the filmography and the professional work Gajendra Chauhan has Done in the past. Apart from the epic serial ‘Mahabharata’ in which he played the role of the eldest son among the Pandavas ‘Yudhisthir’ Gajendra Chauhan’s work lacks sensible roles. He moved into the B grade cinema and was there for quite a sometime, many of his B grade movie clips have been doing the rounds on the social media. He has featured in many Tele-shopping advertisements where he is seen selling some unimportant and impotent products onscreen and to add up to his embarrassment he was even seen chanting the chords of Asharam Bapu in his so called ‘Samagams’. Students and many big heads associated with film and television industry are pointing this appointment as a political one as Gajendra Chauhan has been a close associate to BJP in the recent Lok sabha election.
The institute which has its own legacy of the chairmen in the past which includes prominent figures like Girish karnad, Arood Gopalakrishnan, Saeed Akhtar Mirza etc. Is it fair to cut this legacy in between and compromise with the art and the artists?
Recently a rally was carried out by the protesters against this appointment and the alumni of FTII also took part in the protest. Saeed Mirza, Piyush Mishra are just to name a few. Ace director and producer Kiran Rao was also present in the rally to submerge her views with the protesters. Most of the protesters are students from FTII who don’t want to compromise with the art of film making.
The protest has already moved into the 24th day the students once got a call from the I&B ministry officials but the students were not happy with what the government came up with regarding this issue. There are certain things which could resolve this issue. One is privatization of the institute in which the institute will be governed by a private body and such appointments could be avoided. The students are recommending to hand over the governing body of the institute to the film industry so that no such problems could occur.
But amidst all this controversy what is catching the eyeballs is the way the students are staging the protest, prominent figures from all over the country are supporting the protest in their own way. They are beating the drums, echoing melodies, taping their feet and much more. Vasu Dixit the lead singer of the band ‘Swarthama’ did a gig at the FTII campus followed by the performances of the band ‘Altered theory’ then by another music band ‘NuDge’, ‘SIPA dance troupe’, fire art performer Arijit Singh and so on.
It’s been some days now and we all hope that the protest ends soon.
